Description

We recently had a litter of kittens. I captured the event with camera and started a project I think I'll enjoy and will challenge me. I am going to the stages of growth as the kittens develop. This image is just moments after mom licked him dry. I used 2b and b mechanical pencil, 90lb canson paper, tissue, qtip and stubby for smearing with a kneaded and regular white eraser. The image on paper is 6 inches x 6 inches. This was my first animal portrait and I am learning as I go.

This is sooo lovely!!
Your sketching is really good, I especially like the fingers, youve rendered them so well...The kitten is just adorable, youve chosen a great image to draw!!
There is some flatness on the kitties bottom , but thats an extremely minor point to notice...
Love this, greatt work ;) Way to go on the animal sketches

I love this! The accuracy in reproducing this image goes to the extent that I get the feeling that the person holding the kitten bites their nails. Am I right?

Well done :)
I would try using some softer/darker lead for the dark areas the contrast is a bit low (you can see all the details but blacks are not that black)

aww!!! Really really beautiful!

I love how you paid attention up to the smallest detail, the way you rendered the whiskers and even the finger prints. But ya, the contrast is a bit low. Still, awesome work! (thumbup) (thumbup)

Thank you everyone for the comments. I really enjoyed doing this piece. I'll add this note on contrast. The image has some depth of field and I have a habit of overworking things in an effort to gain some form of perfection, which in the end usually ruins the piece and so I was holding back a little once I achieved the right textures and tones. I detest reading artists mentioning how the picture looks better in real life and their scanners are bad, so I tend to avoid any mention of it, but yes, I have an older, lower line scanner with few settings beyond color and dpi, so often the image comes out far lighter then on paper. The addition of the 2b has helped in achieving darker darks, as I use mechanical, I wonder what grade pencil anyone would suggest I add to my collection that would be even darker?
Thanks again for the reviews and comments and votes!

Oh yes.. Being the kittens will find a new home, we only nick named them. We called this one Hoover, as in the vacuum, because of its vivacious eating habits. Two weeks later and turns out, she's the runt :)
Also, yes, the model for the hands does bite his nails and complained mightily about my accuracy to detail, down to hang nail skin, but I felt it only added to the image, not detracted from it with inclusion.

I don't like the forehead being that white. It looks a bit like a overexposed photo. But what i do really really like is the fact you managed to draw such a detailed picture on such a small paper! It's smaller than A4, 16x16cm! And you can even see the fingerprint on the fingers! I like that very much.
